As time wore on, I concluded I was not finding the challenges I originally sought. My fascination and excitement was furthered with the University of Texas when I researched the Anthropology Department. I was amazed at the neverâ€"ending opportunities for research. I refused to settle into the mediocre routines around me and merely coast along with strong, yet hollow grades. The more I considered and explored my academic goals and future, the clearer it became that only the University of Texas offers the rigor and challenge that I seek. Admission Decisions

Admission Decisions My passion for climbing is fueled by the adrenaline that pumps through my veins. I love to play viola; I get a rush communicating without-words to my quartet members in order to convey a musical message. I continued my statistical training by completing the second graduate statistics course on model comparisons with Dr. Roger Johnson, a Professor in the Psychology Department. The model comparison course was not only the most challenging course I have taken as an undergraduate, but the most important. As the sole undergraduate in the course and only college algebra under my belt, I felt quite intimidated. Yet, the rigors of the class compelled me to expand my thinking and learn to overcome any insecurities and deficits in my education. The effort paid off as I earned not only an ‘A’ in the course, but also won the T.O.P.S. award in statistics. This award is given to the top undergraduate student with a demonstrated history of success in statistics. Professor Mitchell obtained a grant to take a class of students to Belgium in order to study the EU. I am at my happiest reading a good book; their complex stories captivate me and I aspire to write a novel of my own. I want to make laws that improve my country; all people should have a shot at the American dream. There are various semesters where, due to this demand, I attended school less than full time. Despite taking a long time and the difficulty in carving separate time for school with such occupational requirements, I remained persistent aiming towards attending school as my schedule would allow. My military commitment ends this July and will no longer complicate my academic pursuits. I come from a small, economically depressed town in Northern Wisconson. Our vision is to be the company that best recognizes and serves the needs of international students around the world. Additionally, my attendance would allow the Political Science department to make a more accurate determination on how well I would fit in to the program than from solely my graduate school application. My interest in attending the University of Rochester in particular, relates to my first semester at OU and the opportunity to take an introductory course in statistics with the now retired Dr. Larry Miller. Through the combination of a genuine appreciation and knack for statistics and with his encouragement, I proceeded to take his advanced statistics class as well as the first graduate level statistics course at OU. This course revealed a direct correlation between what I had studied in the classroom with the real world. After spending several weeks studying the EU, its history and present movement towards integration, the class flew to Brussels where we met with officials and proceeded to learn firsthand how the EU functioned. This fall I will embark on writing an additional honors thesis in political science. While the precise topic of my thesis is undecided, I am particularly interested in Mexico and its development towards a more democratic government. Minoring in Spanish, I have read various pieces of literature from Mexico and have come to respect Mexico and Latin American culture and society. I look forward to conducting this research as it will have a more qualitative tilt than my thesis in psychology, therefore granting an additional understanding of research methodology. As an undergraduate, I was privileged to gain extensive research experience working in a research lab with Dr. Carol. Participating in such a large study from start to finish has validated my interest in academic research as a profession. In order to pay for school and continue being active in the community, I enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard as a Medic. Due to the increased deployment schedule and demands placed on all branches of the military after September 11, my attendance in school has necessarily come second to my commitment to the military. To a casual onlooker, this question may appear inconsequential in its hypothetical nature, but as they say; you are what you eat. My inclination towards the varied is not contained to my food habitsâ€"it is a recurring theme throughout my life. I regularly switch from my mom’s house to my dad’s. I have a fifteen-year-old sister and a two-year-old brother. I am passionate about protecting the environment; reducing our effect on global-warming is of the utmost importance to me. I want to help those in need; people still don’t have access to clean water and I want to use my privilege to help change that. I strive to become fluent in Spanish; traveling the world is a dream of mine. Recently, I have discovered that I really like to code; I’m sure in the coming years I will explore things I didn’t know I was interested in. It’s a chance to add depth to something that is important to you and tell the admissions committee more about your background or goals. Test scores only tell part of your story, and we want to know more than just how well you work. Take a look at our college essay samplesto get an idea of what colleges are looking for in your essay.

Think of this not as an exercise designed to impress colleges, but as a piece of writing as sincere as a love letter. Some experts suggest that you start your 500 word college application essay with a brief personal story and then draw a “moral” from it that expresses your values. These days, most colleges require that your application essay be no more than 500 words. In that essay, colleges expect you to reveal your writing ability and, just as important, the real You, with a capital Y. It’s hard to put your words into the right tone and framework to have your college application essay be effective. Attempting to craft an essay to impress your particular vision of an admissions officer is foolhardy. It may actually undermine your chances of getting into a particular school. 10 Topics To Avoid In A College Admission Essay

10 Topics To Avoid In A College Admission Essay In a few months, my blood no longer froze when I was called on in class. I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. Clearly, this method wasn’t going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I don’t have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. What I’ve realized though, is that I don’t have to sacrifice all for one. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge I’ve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond “potatoes! Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I don’t know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically they’re the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I don’t feel I’ve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I can’t do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence.

College Application Essay Examples

College Application Essay Examples Read your essay first to make sure that it says exactly what you want it to say. Then read it again for spelling and grammar errors. Once you've chosen the topic for you essay, write a first draft. Don't worry about making it perfect, just write down everything you can think of that relates to your topic. Rinse and repeat until you are sure that the final copy is as close to perfect as it can get. Tell us about a journey â€" real, imagined, or metaphorical. Don't try to copy someone else's tone in your writing. You don't have to sound like anyone else, you just have to sound like you. An easy way to write in your own voice is by avoiding clichés. Don't use phrases that you've heard repeated over and over, unless you can put your own, creative spin on them. Make sure you write real experiences and do not make up stories. Make sure that your essay does not exceed the maximum word and page length. Especially considering how short these essays usually are and that the general rule of thumb is to stick to just one point to expand on. And then there’s the danger of using too many clichés! Unless otherwise specified, use 1.5 or double spacing for your essay, format it with a one-inch margin all around and clearly delineate your paragraphs using a single space tab. Editing and rewriting should be done in sections, and after you are satisfied that each of it is in order, move on to the next section. After you are done editing, read through it a second time. This might mean cutting out whole sentences or it might mean using fewer words to say the same thing. Once you've drafted your essay, reread and edit it more than once. Staying in Touch with Hometown Friends in College

Staying in Touch with Hometown Friends in College Something I worried about a lot near the end of my senior year of high school was the idea of leaving my longtime best friends behind for college. While some of my friends back home I had known for only a few years, I met most of them when we attended the same elementary school. There’s something special about still being in touch with people who knew you back when you went through your pre-college education track. I have to begin this post by saying yes, you will make new friends in college, and it’s okay to do so. But sometimes, there’s nothing quite like calling up a friend from your hometown. You might want to talk about a memory you just rediscovered from when you were both in the fourth grade, or to talk about the differences in your college experiences, or to reminisce about the less strenuous days of high school. Regardless of why you want to stay in touch with your friends from back home, it’s always a good idea to keep in contact with those you love. While these may not work for everyone, here are the tips I’ve created that seem to work the best for me and my group of friends. I hope you enjoy! Feel free to take these tips and make falling out of touch with hometown friends a thing of the past. If you don’t already have a group chat, start one! If you have a group of friends that are also all mutual friends, starting a group chat can be a fun and easy way to make sure everyone stays in the loop. Texting a quick hello! in a larger group chat is sure to get everyone talking every day. Use apps like FaceTime or Skype to make the distance between you and your friends seem smaller.  I FaceTime my best friend from first grade all the time. Sometimes, you just have too much to talk about to put it all in a text. Feeling like youre talking to someone face-to-face is a much better alternative. Also, you get instant feedback from the person instead of waiting for a text back.   Communicate when both you and your friends will be back home at the same time, and make plans to do something at least a few weeks in advance.  This can get a bit tricky! If youre like me, you may have some hometown friends that dont even live in the same state as you anymore. Your hangout weekends may depend mostly on their schedules. For example, this past semester, my friends and I werent all back in our hometown at the same time until winter break. But, it was so rewarding to make sure we all scheduled time to hang out with each other over break, and to share stories we specifically waited to tell until we could all be together again. Make sure you plan ahead, because as college students and young adults, we all have busy lives and our own schedules to follow. Planning ahead will make sure everyone can free up their time and happily hang out! If you use social media, share with your friends what you’ve been up to, and look for the same.  While I dont currently use social media anymore, when I did/when I do in short bursts, I like to see what my friends have been up to. Seeing pictures of them enjoying their time at their own universities makes me smile. I try to update friends on what exciting things are going on in my life as well. Try not to fall back on this as your only form of staying in touch with friends, because social media can often be misleading! Genuinely messaging a friend and asking how they are doing is always the more sincere option. When in doubt, there’s nothing like a quick phone call or text to tell them you care.  I love all my friends, and sometimes a quick, Thinking about you! I hope youre having a great day! makes sure that my friends still know I care about them. I suggest that everyone does the same! If you’re a current high school senior, college may seem like a scary world of the unknown. But, if you choose to stay in touch with your high school friends (not everyone does, and that’s perfectly okay, too), they may help make your college of choice seem that much smaller. I hope you’ve enjoyed my quick tips! Until next time, I-L-L! Lydia Class of 2021 My major is Instrumental Music Education within the College of Fine and Applied Arts. I'm also part of the Marching Illini! Before moving to Urbana, I lived in Collinsville, Illinois, where we are known for some killer Italian food and the World’s Largest Catsup Bottle.

Symbolism And Elements Of Literary Text Hidden Meanings

In life and in literary text hidden meanings are quite common. There is basic level of understanding by the majority and a concealed meaning that requires a deeper level of critical thinking and analysis. Terrance Hayes provides a â€Å"poetic style that resist style† which proves hard to interpret, but I conclude he provides a common theme many might mistake for just an element of poetry (Fabu 1). A common theme present within two of his poems â€Å"Lighthead’s Guide to Galaxy† and â€Å"Antebellum House Party† as well as †Mausoleum† from his signature book Wind in a Box is the idea of symbolism and underlying meanings within itself and how individuals tend to look for something more in things even in life instead of being as it is. In â€Å"Lighthead’s Guide to Galaxy† Terrance presents a wide variety of symbolism. He talks about his careless nights and how it is as troublesome as a women with no bra in the winter (1). He is referring to the constriction of the muscle around a woman’s nipples in the cold and how he could liken this experience to that of a long troublesome night he encounters. He shows poetry in its rawest symbolic form. Terrance explains that it is â€Å"not what you see, but what you perceive: that’s poetry. Not the noise, but it’s rhythm: arrangement of derangements†¦(1). Although we all perceive things differently and our level of understanding varies humans tend to delve into the deeper meanings instead of the simplistic idea offered when it comes to poetry and life Hayes onceShow MoreRelatedIndian Hindu Epics Mahabharata And Ramayana1537 Words   |  7 Pagesidentity has found its way to generations through literature. Stand and Deliver Free Essays

The movie Stand and Deliver takes place in the lower class part of Las Angeles. When the movie starts you see the teacher driving down the street, and you begin to notice graffiti, closed shops, poor people, and gang members. When you finally see the school for the first time, you see that there is no order in the hallways. We will write a custom essay sample on Stand and Deliver or any similar topic only for you Order Now Students are late for class, disrespectful to teachers, and some students even rigged the fire alarm in order to get out of class early. The teacher observes all of this the first day and doesn’t react, rather he lets the students talk back and throw paper at him. The next day he comes to class with a butchers knife and an apron on and in order to get the class’s attention, he whacks a huge chunk of the apple out in front of the whole class. This immediately gets the students attention and he begins to teach the class fractions. You notice the gang members that hang out in the back of the class. One in particular has to keep his books hidden at home and in the classroom in fear that his gang may see that he wants to learn. I like the way that the professor talks to his students one on one. He comes to them slowly and places his hands slightly in his trousers and he motivates his students with positive reinforcement. He instills the message that if you do not attend his class and do well, you will be serving burgers instead of owning the restaurant. By the end of the movie the teacher has pressed his students to learn calculus, and they all take an Ap exam. The whole class passes the test and because of this they are accused of cheating. The professor is angry with this outcome and he confronts the men who are determining the investigation. I think that the movie will end with the students failing the exam due to cheating. I don’t think the professor will be able to influence the investigators and the movie will end with the students either having to re take the test, or fail it. I do not predict a happy Hollywood ending. How to cite Stand and Deliver, Papers

Tax efficient financial planning

Abstract Taxes are inevitable, and since their impacts on our clients, investment, and income are adverse, our company should create awareness on the various vehicles one can use to reduce taxation. The viable tax reduction vehicles include retirement plans such as traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs, financial planning techniques, and long-term investment holding period among others.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Tax efficient financial planning specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Types of Vehicles Our Clients can use to Reduce Taxation Our clients are certainly subject to different forms of taxation such as income, capital gains, and estate taxes. Taxes have adverse cumulative impacts on our clients’ income and investments such as a reduction of expected returns. Therefore, our company should consider all forms of taxation when creating wealth, land, and financial plans for our customers. Fortunately, several vehicles do exist, that our clients can use to minimize their income, capital gains, and estate taxes as explained herein. Minimizing income tax Our clients can minimize their income taxes by opening personal controlled retirement accounts like an IRA; whereby, they can be contributing annually. An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a self-directed retirement account comprising of â€Å"certificates of deposit, treasury bills, mutual funds, bonds, stocks and other investments for which a holder of the account contracts on his or her own† (Buckner, 2010). Any income saved in a conventional IRA benefit forms income-tax exemption until when that money is withdrawn. Here, it is pertinent to note that, these monies are usually withdrawn when a taxpayer is in the low-tax bracket. These contributions will reduce one’s present taxable income. The monies put in an IRA are deducted from a worker’s income before it is taxed. It is then allowed to grow tax-free until th e worker retires. IRAs are normally subject to various government regulations and limitations. However, unlike the employer-sponsored retirement arrangements, IRA contributions, although they are kept by an annuity or a trust, are usually under the full control of an individual account holder with regard to withdrawals and selection of investments (Buckner, 2010). Furthermore, small business owners and other self-employed individuals can take part in self-directed and self-sponsored retirement accounts. Financial planning methods are also effective in reduction of tax impacts for both estate and income taxes (Alesco Advisors, 2008). Prime examples of income tax planning methods that our clients can use include those that comprise of suspending and eliminating potential capital gains in appreciated property, letting one’s wealth accumulate without present income taxation and postponing taxation. Moreover, they can consider taking returns as capital gains, eliminating or reduci ng taxes, and transferring the tax burden to others (Hallman Rosbenbloom, 2003, p.281). Our company should also ensure that our clients are making appropriate use of their income regulation deductions like student loan interest credit.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Minimizing capital gains tax Capital gain refers to the difference between the buying price of an asset and its selling price. In addition, just like the taxman wishes to cut an income tax from one’s income, s/he also would like to tax your gains from any of your investments. This tax is referred to as capital gains tax. Therefore, our company needs to guide our esteemed customers on vehicles they can use to reduce their capital gains taxes. In most cases, our clients are bound to encounter capital gains taxation from the sale of their real estates or stock investments. Our customers should understand an d appreciate the fact that the U.S taxation system is designed in a way that benefits the long-term investor. In other words, short-term investments are taxed highly than long-term investments. A short-term investment is held for a maximum of one year while a long-term investment is held for more than one year and a maximum of five years. Our clients can use different vehicles to reduce their capital-gains taxes including retirement plans, use of capital losses in offsetting gains and adapting long-term investment holding periods (Black, 2010). Even though, unforeseen changes and circumstances may make one sell his or her shares earlier than s/he envisaged, our clients should strive to find large companies and hold shares for a longer period (Black, 2010). Doing so will enable them pay capital gains taxes at the lowest rates possible. Our clients should also consider various types of retirement plans such as 401k, Roth IRAs, 403bs, and traditional IRAs through which their investment s are allowed to grow without being subject to capital gains taxation (Black, 2010). As mentioned earlier, these plans do not require you to pay taxes for them until when they are withdrawn, when you will already be a low-tax bracket. Minimizing estate tax Estates taxes can be reduced in various ways. For instance, our clients can keep their states at or below the yearly exclusion by giving excess monies to their relatives (Maddoff, et al, 2008, p.539; Quinn, 2005, p.2). They should also consider drawing up the available forms of trusts to help them reduce estate taxes such as bypassing the estate: credit shelter trusts. Conclusion Tax efficient financial and investment planning is possible through various available tax reduction vehicles. These vehicles include retirement plans, long-term investment holding periods, and financial planning techniques among others. Our company should educate our esteemed clients on the most effective tax reduction vehicles depending on an individualà ¢â‚¬â„¢s financial and investment needs. References Alesco Advisors. (2008). Jimi Hendrix was to become the king of rock guitarists. Hendrix came from a middle class family in Seattle, Washington. Some in his family were gifted with the same talent to play music, for instance his dad was a saxophone player and his aunt could play the organ. Jimi Hendrix had begun playing music on an acoustic guitar, which was the very first instrument that he ever had until when he turned twelve he was given an electric guitar, after receiving it he joined up with some local bands. After leaving the army Jimi Hendrix decided to move south of America and search for work. Before long he found work playing rhythm guitar for famous black musicians such as Little Richard, Wilson Pickett and Sam Cookie. By the year 1964 Jimi Hendrix was in New York playing in Greenwich Village Nightclubs. His band was called Jimi James and The Blue Flames.
